About the Abbeyleix bog Walk

We did Collin’s Bog Loop, which was the green arrow 4.5km looped walk. It was a great mixture of woodlands, boardwalks through the Bog, loads of bees and butterflies and purple heather. It really is an amazing walk and we can’t believe we haven’t heard of it before now. There are wooden seats scattered along the walk with a few picnic benches, bug motels, and signs about the different birds and insects and plants and also the map of the walk.

Walking the Bog boardwalk

We turned left when we walked through the wooden arch at the start, if you turn right it will lead you to the busy main road where the main wooden ”Abbeyleix bog walk project” sign is.

Abbeyleix bog walk unique seats

We walked on a gravel path for about 30mins until we turned right to walk on the boardwalk, we could have turned right sooner but it looked crowded so we continued further along the path we were on and then took the right turn which brought you onto a wider boardwalk where you could bring a buggy for a short section, then the boardwalk turns into narrow two sleepers wide boardwalk through more of the bog and woodlands.

There is a wide space to turn your buggy around and go back the way you came if you wanted, at least your experiencing some of the boardwalks, we had the ergo baby carrier so we continued along the narrow boardwalk, some parts were overgrown with wild grass and heather which added to the beauty of the area. It was amazing listening to the birds and the bees and to watch ourlittlehiker follow the butterflies.

The boardwalk leads back into the woods which brings you back to the start.
